Accessibility Successes

Town of Esopus

In 2019, RCAL aided the Town of Esopus in creating its Comprehensive Plan to guide the town's future development.  In this plan, RCAL advised and worked with the town to make their Town Hall, Freer Beach Park, and other parks in the town more accessible for disabled individuals in the Town of Esopus and surrounding communities.  For more information, read the town of Esopus Comprehensive Plan here.

Kingston Point Beach

In 2019, RCAL was asked for a consultation by the City of Kingston Parks and Recreation
which resulted in the implementation of accessible design parameters for several aspects of the park.  Some of the changes that were made are the installation of a concrete apron and access to the hibachis from the pavilion,  a concrete ramp with railings was provided to the restroom buildings and a concrete apron was installed in front of them, an accessible path was provided from the parking lot to the edge of the water, the changing rooms were enlarged to be wheelchair accessible, a new children’s play area was created near the beach with an accessible surface installed throughout, and ground symbols and striping were provided for accessible parking spaces.

Mohonk Preserve

In 1996, the Mohonk Preserve began assessing their hiking trails for accessibility with the help of RCAL Architectural Barrier Consultant, Charlie Fischer.  Their goal was to make trails that are wheelchair accessible and accessible to individuals with limited mobility without compromising the natural integrity and wildlife of the trails.  RCAL nominated the Preserve for the 1996 Association for Independent Living Centers accessibility award for this project, which they went on to win.
