New York Statewide Systems Advocacy Network

What is the New York Statewide Systems Advocacy Network (SSAN)?
The New York Statewide Systems Advocacy Network (SSAN) is a grassroots effort that brings people together from across the state to create meaningful change for individuals with disabilities. It began as part of New York’s Statewide Plan for Independent Living (SPIL), a plan developed every three years by the New York State Independent Living Council and approved by the Administration for Community Living.
Why SSAN Matters
At its core, SSAN is about people—neighbors, advocates, and community members—working together to build a more inclusive, accessible New York for everyone.
The network is made up of hundreds of volunteers who care deeply about disability rights and independent living. When important issues arise—whether it’s proposed legislation or a local concern—SSAN members step up to make sure their voices are heard.
Together, we work toward a future that is barrier-free and fully inclusive.
How You Can Get Involved
SSAN members take action in ways that fit their comfort level and availability. When needed, you might be asked to:
-
Reach out to elected officials by phone or email
-
Share your perspective through a letter to the editor
-
Provide testimony on issues that matter
-
Support voter engagement efforts like registration drives or “get out the vote” campaigns
Every action—big or small—helps move the needle toward greater equity and access.
