Workshops for Parents & Professionals on Special Education Topics
Understanding the CSE
Participants are guided through the Part 200 Regulations governing Special Education. The Committee for Special Education (CSE) follows a process and procedure, which is discussed in detail. Parents review their rights and the school’s responsibilities. Starting with how to get the Committee to evaluate a child and proceeding through committee membership, evaluations, classification and finally creating an Individualized Education Program (IEP), participants have the opportunity to learn and ask questions about the system. Options to pursue if parents disagree with the CSE’s plan are also discussed. A binder of materials is provided.
Becoming An Effective Advocate
Participants learn what an advocate is and strategies for working toward a non-adversarial relationship with the school. Preparing for Committee for Special Education CSE/CPSE/EI meetings is also discussed. Simple organizational techniques for school records are shared. The role of the Parent Representative (member) is discussed and how being a Parent Representative (member) can help you advocate for your child and others. Discussions about utilizing evaluations and information shared during the CSE to make effective choices is also covered.
- Day and evening workshops are available to groups of parents and/or professionals and are designed to last 90 minutes.

School-to-Work Transition Workshop
This is a workshop for students between the ages of 13-21 and their parents or guardian. Transition is a coordinated set of activities amongst the student, parent, school, employers and community resources. The school district is responsible for integrating a transition plan for students with disabilities beginning at the age of 15. This workshop helps students and parents develop an individual and specific transition plan.
