"Workshops for Parents & Professionals on Special Education Topics"

UNDERSTANDING THE CSE

Participants are guided through the Part 200 Regulations governing Special Education. The Committee for Special Education (CSE) follows a process and procedure, which is discussed in detail. Parents review their rights and the school’s responsibilities. Starting with how to get the Committee to evaluate a child and proceeding through committee membership, evaluations, classification and finally creating an IEP (Individualized Education Program), participants have the opportunity to learn and ask questions about the system. Options to pursue if parents disagree with the CSE’s plan are also discussed.  A binder of materials is provided.

COORDINATING HOME & SCHOOL STRATEGIES

Consistency and structure form the best foundation for progress to occur. Children with Special Education needs receive accommodations and modifications at school; how can these be integrated at home to help boost success rates. Topics covered include:

  • Maintaining Structure and Consistency
  • Communication Strategies Between Home and School

  • Behavior Management Techniques for  the Whole Day

DEVELOPING IEPs

The new amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) put a strong emphasis on the role of parents in developing an IEP for their child. This workshop focuses on what should be included in an IEP and what it all means. Then, once you have the document:

  • How do you read it?
  • How do you make sure it is being implemented?

Important follow-up strategies and team building ideas are shared. Bring your child’s IEP along to review.

Becoming An Effective Advocate

Participants learn what an advocate is and strategies to be an effective one. Preparing for CSE/CPSE/EI meetings is also discussed. Simple organizational techniques for school records are shared. The role of the Parent Representative (member) is discussed and how being a Parent Representative (member) can help you advocate for your child and others. Discussions about utilizing evaluations and information shared during the CSE to make effective choices is also covered.

Workshops occur weekly at the RESOURCE CENTER FOR ACCESSIBLE LIVING, INC.
